Last night I had a feeling…when the kids came back from their Dad’s, which was really a weekend with their Grandma, sugary candy bags half eaten spilling out of their hands. I knew this was not going to go well, like hitting a brick wall with a tiny car at 60 mph. Myself recovering from a four-hour drive and a great weekend at a cabin with girlfriends coming to a rapid close. Back to reality with a BAM!

Ah, but today is a new day! It just happens to be Monday. Suffering from an energy-induced, heavy-headed hangover, I could barely imagine the drive to school with the boys, let alone the energy needed for the prep time activities: shower, teeth brushing, breakfast, backpack menagerie and, of course, the whirlwind of rushing out the door to hurry, hurry up, then…the 30-minute drive into school.

Ah yes, coffee would be needed. Much coffee. Thankful for the extra sleep with the change in the clocks from the daylight savings time over the weekend. I felt a bit of luck on my side as I threw back some Tylenol in anticipation of the need for a clear head.

Nathan awoke gently and immediately asked for his Choo Choos, which was an easy request to fill given that they were already set up on the living room floor from his Daddy time over the weekend. He is only 2, but he is such a laid back kid. I’m thankful for his disposition, but I cannot take the credit for that part of his genetics. Another thing to appreciate reminding me of his Daddy. What a great guy, off to work with a pre-teen every morning to get her to the bus in time, and then his transition into his work, the daily grind through the red tape of local government.

Back in Stay-at-home Mom World, I had the gift of 30 more minutes with just Nathan — until the creak of the child gate abruptly ended that daydream. Josh appeared crouched down at the top stair, hanging off the gate with his head downward, whining about not wanting to go to school. Most days I would brush by his comments with redirecting questions about what he wanted for breakfast to move gently into the morning routine. Today that did not happen.

Anxiety medication was changed last week, and we knew there would be a “transition time.” Apparently it had arrived. Not unexpected, but it always feels like a setback. With an “in like a lion” mentality, the overly worrisome aura of a third-grade boy with an anxiety disorder was staring me down. I guided him into the kitchen with a gentle touch and sideways hug (because he also has Sensory Processing Disorder).

Having addressed the psychological naming of the intensity and roller-coaster-like personality of what is my oldest son Josh’s reality, you begin to see how an ordinary, mundane day would be a welcome relief — far away from the stress-filled surge of every agonizing decision or delivery of such — each and every day. Especially on school days followed by a weekend, and that would be Monday. Which is today.

“Can I have cake for breakfast?” Josh asked. Without hesitation and with great abandon of traditional norms, I firmly replied. ” Yes. Red velvet.” I just happened to have some left over from the girls’ weekend.

Now Robby, my second grader, appeared in the kitchen with his smiling eyes and gentle loving way. I offered him Red Velvet for breakfast and he replied, “No, I will have cereal before I have cake.” Ah, the voice of reason, an old soul in the tiny body of a 7 year old. I’m so appreciative of his special energy, his presence.

It became clear that this was not a day for school. The calendar said Monday, everyone had a full night of sleep, but no one — including me — was ready to go into the week…not just yet. Robby asked for some medicine, Tylenol, for his eyes and forehead that was hurting and because he was seeing things kind of blurry.

And our fate was sealed. Home on Monday with three boys.

The empowerment of being the Mom at times can be so freeing. I called the school and told the secretary, who knows my voice so very well, that my boys will be home today and that she should be thankful I am not sending Josh in to have the teacher manage him, given his difficult reaction to the medication change.

To which she replied, “Oh Yes! We really do appreciate that.” I already knew that mental health is just as important, if not more so, than physical health, but today it was nice to have someone from the” other side,” someone from the “system” of homework and expectations of parenting, affirm my basic view of what was best for my children. Today, it was the best decision for all of us.

The day is young, the Red Velvet is soon to wear off and I will need to pull out another trick from my bag to move us swiftly through the mid-morning to lunch.

An interview with Insiah Beckman, Chanda Parkinson and Sunny Dawn Johnston on their upcoming seminar at Minneapolis Edge Life Expo

With the dawning of the Age of Aquarius and a greater focus on the evolution of human consciousness, children have always been a part of the conversation. The next generation. The ones who lead humanity forward. The ones who are born with innate gifts that synchronize perfectly with the challenges that lie in front of us.

Three highly intuitive teachers — Insiah Beckman, Chanda Parkinson and Sunny Dawn Johnston — will address the children of today, young people they consider “the most powerful beings on the planet,” during a special workshop intended for parents at the Minneapolis Edge Life Holistic Expo [www.edgelife.net] on November 19-20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1300 Nicollet Mall.

The expo also will feature keynote speakers (tickets include expo admission), more than 100 exhibitors, a bookstore, intuitive and psychic readings, free workshops and expert seminars — on health, wellness and spirituality. The event is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. Admission to expo hall (includes free workshops) is $7, or $5 each for groups of two or more.

“A Powerful Spiritual Workshop for Parents of Today’s Children” will share what we need to know about children who are spiritually conscious and how to support them as they grow up. Participants will learn how to support the healthy development of these young souls and how to invoke spiritual protection for them from the angels and archangels. The public also will learn what the angels have to say about these children, who often are called “indigos” or “crystals,” based on qualities perceived in their auras.

The following is a conversation about the children of today, with the three spiritual teachers presenting this workshop:

Chanda Parkinson

What signs tell you that the children of today are the most powerful beings on the planet?
Chanda Parkinson: The intensity to their personalities is the first thing you can notice. They appear wise and often have a look in their eyes that tells you they understand more than they are able to let on. Often children of today are hyper-sensitive and empathic, so they have a difficult time keeping the world and what’s going on in it out. This affects their moods and behaviors tremendously.

Insiah Beckman: Most of the children of today, especially born in the last decade, are more conscious and aware, with special gifts of intelligence, insight, intuitiveness and psychic abilities. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to meet some of these bright shining stars of humanity in the work that I do. They come from all backgrounds – some from older parents, young parents, single households and different belief systems. These “Children of the New Dawn” are the way-showers, bringing in all the positive changes of love, harmony and balance to a system that has forgotten its origins of love and compassion.

Sunny Dawn Johnston: The energy that they are coming in with is much more clear. You can feel it in their energy. If you are a visual person, you can see it in their aura. For someone who is not sensitive, it feels like someone who knows their purpose here and is clear about that.

What I see in them is a knowingness of their journey — sometimes that is conscious, but it is absolutely clear energetically.

They are coming en masse to help shift our planet, to shift the energy, to shift the models that no longer work, whether that’s in government, education or health care. These kids are coming in with a really clear intention of being here on their journey and knowing what they need to do, but not necessarily being able to express it.

Sunny Dawn Johnston

How can parents better support these children as they interact in a culture that does not recognize their gifts?
Sunny Dawn Johnston: I think one of the best ways the parents can support them is by acknowledging it with them: You are gifted, you are special, you have talents, and you may not be like everyone else, but we’re not supposed to be. We’re supposed to be different. We’re supposed to be dynamic in our own ways, and your gifts and talents manifested differently than other people’s.

Too often kids get into that comparison game at a very young age, and so the parents can support them by walking that talk, by not getting wrapped up in the “keeping up with the Joneses” or focusing only on physical or material attributes — and really be that change that we want to see for our children.

Affirm for those children who they really are. “You know what? You are a very evolved soul and you might not have chosen an easy path, maybe you don’t feel like you fit in, but as you step into who you really are, you will attract those to you who are in alignment with your energy and your truth.”

It just so happens that a lot of people are unaware right now, but they are coming into awareness.

Insiah Beckman

Insiah Beckman: Fortunately, it is much easier now than about 20 years ago when gifted children were frowned upon or thought to be weird or strange. People are more accepting. Many people believe in guides, angels and past lives.

Of primary importance is to ensure that children are in an environment of love and harmony. Because of their sensitive nature, parents should keep away from disruptive behavior in their presence. Everything is energy. Words and sounds affect all around you, be it animals, plants or even just the environment.

I would strongly recommend lots of hugs and words of love and support at all times. Encourage them to be in nature as often as possible, for nature carries its own soothing and expansive energy, renewing and rejuvenating the soul. Listen to the sounds of nature, observe nature with joy and wonder, breathe in, exchange and integrate that which is part of all life — and also part of you.

Chanda Parkinson: It’s not so much about spending a lot of time and energy trying to convince our culture to recognize the gifts as it is more important that the children have space in their family life to be exactly who they are without judgment or editing.

Create a safe, nurturing and protective sanctuary for those little beings at home. Consistency in their daily rhythms is so important, as is having a strong spiritual presence in at least one of the parents who are there to support them and answer any questions that come up.

Children need time to allow their minds and inner eye to grow in a healthy way, unhindered by so much information that, with our technological age, it seems more and more difficult to get away from. Restricting the influence of the information world is crucial to the spiritual development of all children, but especially children who are psychically gifted. Shut off the TV, monitor all media intake and get children connecting with nature. They need so much space to allow their full creativity to develop and their intuition to strengthen.

If only parents really knew that less information, a quiet serene disposition and a consistent and steady presence allow children’s true genius to shine. We have overloaded our senses with toys, games and places to play that are noisy and disruptive to a sense of peace and well-being. None of that is necessary. Children play just as well with dirt, rocks, sticks and what they can gather in the backyard.

What are your guides or angels telling you about these children and the role they are to play in the future of the planet?
Chanda Parkinson: Right now, structures are crumbling…these children come in with an enhanced creativity and wisdom that will allow them to rebuild what has fallen.

Insiah Beckman: These magnificent children are our future and have contracted to bring in the positive changes of love, peace and harmony to our beautiful planet. They also carry a vibration frequency of transformation with their light, love and expansive positive energy.

Your planet is going through a massive transition from The Love of Power to the Power of Love. Changes are evident everywhere. People want justice and equality, and they want to get away from being self-serving to service for all in an equitable, fair manner.

Mother Earth also is doing a lot of releasing as she transits to a higher level of consciousness to accommodate the new earth. These beautiful Children of the New Dawn are ushering in a new golden age of love, peace and harmony for all in our beautiful planet. Humanity has abused and disrespected her for several thousands of years, saturating her with all the destructive toxins, chemicals and warfare, when we were heading for self-destruction. We are now getting to a time of balance and harmony.

Sunny Dawn Johnston: They are telling me that these children are the ones that are going to break down the system that no longer works for us, to help us to expand to a vision that is of oneness instead of individualness. That might not be the right word, but you know what I mean. They’re teaching us to come together. They are teaching us to look beyond what is seen physically, to look inside instead of outside, look within instead of without. They are offering us an opportunity to heal by challenging the paradigms that we have been living and that we continue to associate ourselves with. So many people say, “You know what, I don’t like this and it doesn’t work, but I don’t know what else to do.” So they’re causing us to shift that.

I’ve walked this journey myself and with my son, and it’s challenging — and at the same time there’s so much relief and so much peace when you can get to that place.

Please share an experience you’ve had with a young person that represents what we are sharing about their abilities and gifts.
Sunny Dawn Johnston: My son is 21 now. I think he was kind of a way-shower. And like him, a lot of the kids who are coming in have challenges — physical, mental, emotional issues that most people want to medicate or have them conform in particular ways.

My son came in with a bunch of diagnoses — attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, bipolar tendencies — and the medical world wanted to medicate him because that would make him conform. I tried that, because I didn’t know any better at the beginning.

Then, I started discovering that this response was actually stifling his spirit. It was holding him back, so we started expanding and looking into alternative ways that I likely never would have done had I not had him. I had to look at alternative options in education; I pulled him out of the regular school system and put him into an alternative school system. I had to look at alternative health care, including chiropractic, biofeedback, energy healing.

Everything shifted from traditional to alternative because of my son’s energy. It came in in a way that doesn’t necessarily look like, “Oh, I’m a spiritual teacher who knows my journey.” And in the process, he learned about himself, and the experience was a ripple effect that led to teaching for my whole family, and teaching for my students and clients. Everyone has learned from this one little being.

These new children are coming into body with autism and other challenges because we need to learn from these experiences. These children are coming to parents who can support them on some level, whether we’re conscious of it or not. I was much more conscious of my second child than I was with my first, because my first broke down all those barriers and that “this is the way you do it” mode. He opened me up to a new way of seeing and thinking, and so he has been that Child of the New Dawn. He has taught so many of those things, and then in my teachings I’ve been able to share them.

We don’t always teach through phenomenal, positive experiences. Sometimes the teaching is through the challenge and through the strength that you gain within yourself and your knowingness as you walk through those challenges.

Chanda Parkinson: I remember a time recently when we were driving to a doctor’s appointment and my daughter Addi kept looking at the seat next to her and saying “Hi Martin,” over and over again. Crystal clear as a bell. Once she got all of our attention, she then said, “bye bye see you soon.” Well, Martin happens to be my deceased grandfather and he has been known to visit the grandchildren in our family. I have cousins whose children have seen him, as well. He loved kids, and it’s no wonder Addi is seeing him.

My son Jacob corrects my parenting occasionally. He will challenge me when I am making a decision that he feels is not for our highest good. He is so perceptive and highly intuitive. I did not listen in the beginning and found that if I had, we would have been in better shape because of it. He is so kind-hearted, and he defends his sister Addi when she gets into trouble. It is marvelous to watch his leadership and intuition shine forth constantly.

On your personal journey in this lifetime, why do you feel called to speak about the Children of the New Dawn?
Chanda Parkinson: I have two precious and adorable children, one an indigo and one a crystal. I have learned so much from them, but it has taken a tremendous act of discipline to slow down and pay attention to what is going on with my children. We now find ourselves tuning in to each other’s rhythms, and we now know the moment something is off with someone in our family. We are a tight psychic unit.

I am so passionate about working with families, because I have been there…in moments of total frustration confused by messages our society sends us to move faster, grow bigger, want more, more, more…knowing it was going against my very being and my intuition.

I stopped myself in my tracks. I have done two years of studying and research and have made phenomenal changes in my own family that have promoted more connection and peace. It’s still a work in progress, but I feel as if we have created a solid foundation for the spiritual and psychic development of our children. I am so passionate about the results I am experiencing and want to share it with the world!

The formula is different for every family, but there are such simple things you can do immediately to eliminate the chaos in your life and bring so much more peace and joy to everyday living. It has not been an easy path to this awareness, but I have to believe that this message will resonate with the hearts of parents, and hopefully stir them into action.

Insiah Beckman: I strongly felt that it was important for me to share some of my experiences for parents with children who are out of the norm. As a child, I always felt lost. I could not understand most of the behavioral patterns of people: hungry people, the lame, the sick, fighting, anger and a host of other human frailties. I could not resonate with what I was seeing or feeling. I would go outside at night and look at the stars and beg them to take me home. “I don’t understand what is going on, I don’t like it here!”

Fortunately for me, my mother was a beautiful soul, very loving and caring. She was religious then, and she became very spiritual in her later years. She explained to me some of my concerns to the best of her ability without the tools of all the spiritual knowledge and terms that present-day lightworkers use.

Sunny Dawn Johnston: I have personally experienced it as a transformational, life-changing, life-altering event in my life through having my son. Not only just the process of having to speak up and to hold space for him as a child who is different, but also to learn as a parent that I could not force him to be the way that I thought he was supposed to be either. I was functioning off of old paradigms, and I was also working off the belief system that you have to be a certain way. I didn’t know or understand how to do that differently until he taught me.

I think a lot of parents get stuck in the “I’m the parent, you’re the child” mentality. In my experience — and from what I’ve witnessed in a lot of my students and clients — they’re the teacher and we’re the students. That’s sometimes hard for those of us that who were raised with the “I’m the boss” attitude.

I’ve lived it and I know what it’s like to be in the not-so-healthy space with it, and then I know what it’s like to make that transition and really embrace it. It’s really so heart-opening for everyone when we can just honor who they are and why they’re really here.

What will be the key message you want to leave Expo attendees with during the Children of the New Dawn presentation?
Sunny Dawn Johnston: The words that come for me are, “It’s time for a change,” and so I want to leave them not only with knowing that, but also with steps to be able to make that change in a more loving and honoring way than maybe what people are creating now. It is time for change, and our children are the ones to bring it. We’re the supporters of it.

Chanda Parkinson: I want to leave with the message that our children are not alone. We are all moving through this intense time together. The discipline and action steps to tighten the psychic family unit are worth it. Sometimes this may mean sacrificing sometimes selfish desires in favor of creating a space that nurtures spiritual and creative growth. We are only caregivers for our children such a short time before they are out in the world expressing their potential. It is worth the sacrifices of personal interest in favor of creating a den of love, protection and constant support. That does not mean hovering as parents, but it does require a tremendous presence to hold the space for a family’s spiritual success.

It’s not about achieving perfection. It’s about striving to reach an ideal and all the magic that is experienced and created along the way. It’s the process.

“When you let go of who you want your child to be, and just let her be who she was meant to be, she will flourish, and you will come to realize she’s perfect just the way she is.” – Rev. Karen Taff

My life’s work has shifted to helping parents and others understand that children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (“ASD”) also come with gifts. Too often, parents of a child with this diagnosis assume that success in life for their child is out of reach, or will be marginal at best. Autism-related reference books typically leave parents with a sense of frustration and hopelessness.

I am a 60-year-old adult diagnosed with both Asperger’s syndrome and ADD. I have enjoyed many successes in my life, professionally, financially and socially. I am a living testament that the potential is there for your ASD child to succeed.

If we are to succeed, we need Love and Perseverance in the form of proper guidance and adequate support as we struggle to find our way in an overwhelming, neurotypical world. Guidance and support comes across to us most effectively if it comes from a place of love and understanding within you. The ultimate goal is to gently help us identify, cultivate and productively utilize our gifts and talents in ways that allow us to claim the successes as our own.

What are the gifts? Many gifts are commonly attributed to people having an ASD. We can be: innovative; creative; loyal; faithful, honest in word, thought and deed; sweet and kind; talented, very loving, in our own way; consistent; some of us have unusual focus (hyper-focus), forgiving; open and direct in our communications; some even have savant skills to varying degrees.

Your challenge is to help us develop our gifts and talents into practical and productive endeavors, both socially and occupationally. Internationally known autism advocate Temple Grandin, in her book The Way I See It, aptly states: “There is often too much emphasis in the world of autism on the deficits of these children and not enough emphasis on developing the special talents that many of them possess.”

Looking back, the two most important attributes instilled in me by my parents that helped me succeed were: “You can learn to do anything you set your mind to do,” and “Be persistent — don’t give up.”

The modern airplane grew out of a lowly bicycle shop as a result of the curiosity, intrigue and persistence of two brothers who loved to tinker around. The key to learning is motivation, and the key to motivation is self-interest. We have to want to do it, whatever “it” is, not just to please or appease you, but to please ourselves. Autistics and Aspies are rarely motivated significantly by either praise or punishment. Persistence is a natural trait in everyone, but through diligence it can be trained out of a child. It often seems that our persistence is discouraged in order to make someone else’s life easier. Persistence, like many other traits, needs to be guided toward its appropriate use. Not all situations call for persistence.

Your child is unique. Many autistics throughout history have become masters of their gifts and talents, and some of those have been directly responsible for major leaps of progress in the arts and sciences.

“My parents always told me I was something else, but this was probably not what they had in mind.” – Dr. Eric Pearl

Dr. Eric Pearl walked away from one of the most successful chiropractic practices in Los Angeles when he and others started witnessing miraculous healings. Since that time, he has committed himself to imparting the light and information of the Reconnective Healing process through extensive lectures and seminars about “The Reconnection.” Dr. Pearl’s work is being studied throughout the world and his book, The Reconnection: Heal Others, Heal Yourself, has been translated in 30 languages. To date he has taught more than 40,000 Reconnective Healing Practitioners in more than 60 countries.

I recently interviewed Dr. Eric Pearl at the 8th annual Conscious Life Expo in Los Angeles.

Dr. Eric Pearl

What is The Reconnection?
Dr. Eric Pearl: The Reconnection, based on what is being demonstrated and the research being done, seems to be a new level of healing that we have not had on the planet before. The Reconnection allows us to completely transcend our energy healing techniques; not having to learn any complicated steps or worrying about moving your hands clockwise, or counterclockwise, pulling up, or pulling down. At the same time as it allows us to transcend the techniques, it allows us to access much, much more.

For example, little Demitrios from Thessaloniki, Greece, had cerebral palsy and couldn’t walk or speak and was scheduled for surgery, and after one session with the healing he now walks, plays and runs. His father is a prominent M.D., and his mother a nurse practitioner. Both parents, along with his physical therapist, speech therapist and occupational therapist, attended the seminars to learn how to do it after they saw Demitrios’ healing.

The funny thing is that there’s a challenge for adults in learning this work, and the challenge for adults is the ego that they’ve developed over the years. They like to come into the seminars and say, “Well, I don’t need to take the first level.” Or, “I’m already advanced. I’ve studied this and I’m a master in that, and a grand master in the other,” and their egos interfere with them being able to access the purity of this work.

They wonder why some practitioners are able to bring it through so well. The practitioners who bring it through the best are the ones who very often don’t come from any background in healing, so they don’t have to unlearn anything. They don’t come in with the fears of taking on negative energy, or thinking they need to shake it off or spray themselves with alcohol or anything like that.

What does all of this have to do with teaching kids?
Dr. Pearl: We recently developed a program called Reconnective Kids! where we teach children how to do this healing. We have found children access healing fairly instantly. Whereas it takes a weekend to teach this to an adult, children can learn this within a couple of hours.

One of our first experiences that I loved in doing this was down with the Maori children in New Zealand. The Maori are the native indigenous people of New Zealand. They have their own special tracts of land for their communities that they received through their negotiations with the government. When we went down, they invited us to come to their land, which they call MARAE. While we were there, we noticed that their school systems were very much like the old-time school systems we used to have in the Western U.S., where it was just one big class with a large age range. The age range of the students was between 4 to 15 years old, and we could tell from the conversation that the children were interested in the healing work that we were doing.

I taught a main seminar there for the public, and on my last day I was supposed to fly on to the next country. Instead, I extended my stay until later and I went down with someone to teach the children how to do this work. You would be shocked to witness this. To see a 4- or 5-year-old child begin to allow themselves to feel the work in their hands and to work on someone from a distance, even an adult who’s lying down on a table – one of their teachers, one of their elders. As they learn to access this work, the adult bodies involuntarily go into jerking movements or repetitive patterns, and the child’s mouth opens so wide you can hardly see anything but two chocolate eyes and a couple of ears.

Why do you think it’s so easy for kids to learn this healing?
Dr. Pearl: Children learn this instantly because they don’t come in with fear. They don’t come in thinking that they need to protect themselves from something. They don’t come in thinking that they need a special necklace or amulet to make themselves more. They already allow themselves to be 100 percent without thinking they need something external added in.

Kids are not worried about shaking themselves off or zipping up their etheric bodies to protect themselves from being taken over, or any of the other things that are fear-based holdovers that are in many of our energy healing techniques taught today.

When a 4- or 5-year old child works with another person, and that person may have, for instance, had a stroke and lost the ability to use his arm, and suddenly he regains full use of his arm, the adults who witness this are all in shock. The child takes it as, “Oh well, one more part of my morning,” and they move right forward.

This is the way healing should be today. We reach for a glass from the cabinet to get a glass of orange juice and we go, (snaps fingers) “Well, what’s next in my morning?” We brush our teeth and go, (snaps fingers) “What’s next in my morning?” Someone needs a healing, (snaps fingers) we go, “What’s next in my morning?” And we just keep rolling, because this is a part of our human nature. Children are the ones who recognize this. The children are the teachers.

As someone who works with children, I see the simplicity and how naturally kids can tap into their little energetic selves, but you say these are frequencies of light and information. Where is it coming from?
Dr. Pearl: I can’t fully explain it; we don’t totally understand it. What we’ve had here before has been energy healing. What we have been learning are portions, fractions or subsets of the energy healing: Reiki, Qigong, abc, efg, xyz, alpha, beta, delta, gamma, quantum this, matrix that. It doesn’t matter what we call it.

Each time we access healing through a technique, we access a specific portion of the energy. This is why Reiki feels different than Qigong. They’re all different subsets. But what the researchers have discovered in this work of Reconnective healing is that somehow we seem to be able to skip the technique entirely, to completely transcend the technique. And then what we access is no longer a subset of energy, it is the entirety of energy.

But what’s more interesting is that the entirety of energy is only a subset of this new level of this healing. This healing is comprised – as explained to us through various studies – of energy, light and information. And they say it’s a level of healing we haven’t had here on the planet before. Now, of course, we have light on the planet. Of course, we have information. Of course, we have energy. But this form of healing has not ever been seen here before.

For instance, we know that energy gets weaker with distance if you start at an inch and you move a foot and you move a yard, energy measurably gets weaker. I’m not speaking about distance healing, I’m just talking about distance. This new level of healing gets stronger with distance; it functions differently than any form of light that we’ve seen here in research.

Somehow the information seems to inform not just the physical body, but the entire person’s essence of what their natural balance is. It seems to be communicated through light. Energy is a carrier in this, and what really happens is that the person’s body returns to its natural light vibration, its natural balance. Anything that’s out of balance with that pretty much has nothing to hold onto. We return to our natural vibration of light when we play with this.

Let’s say the 5-year-old child works with an adult. The child learns how to come in and bring his or her hands to a place where they start to feel certain sensations, which vary. Sometimes it’s pushing, sometimes it’s pulling, sometimes it’s cool or warm, or hot, dry, wet, cold, all at the same time, but it’s always fascinating and always feels good. It becomes a reminder to that child of their natural state of joy or bliss that they’re sharing a space, even though they’re not necessarily physically touching the person on the table that they’re working with.

This vibration, this sensation, somehow is in that other person’s field, and a reminder goes off inside of them also that says: “Hey I remember this. This is me vibrating as light. I think I’ll do it again.” And as they return to that light vibration, anything denser, anything heavier than light – which tends to include pretty much most of our healing challenges – seems to have nothing left to hold onto. If appropriate, which it generally is, that health challenge falls away and the person receives a healing.

Healing is really just this simple, and anything else is designed to sell us something. And how do people sell us something? By appealing to our egos. But the children are beyond that. Before they get ego involved, they’re already on to the next thing to catch their attention, because they stay in that childlike state of awe and present-moment awareness. Fill a room full of toys and the child runs to the first toy that catches his urge or attention until another one sparkles a certain way, and then they run over there, and they run over here, and that’s just the natural way that they approach the healing. No steps, no shoulds, no shouldn’ts, no protections. No “Am I doing it right?” or “Am I doing it wrong?” Just that childlike state of wonder, of awe, of observation and of next, (snaps fingers) “Who’s next?” (Snaps fingers) “Who can I help next?”

What does this mean to the healing community, now that we have children who can heal?
Dr. Pearl: Well, it doesn’t mean just now that we have children who can heal. Hopefully, it means are we willing to look past our own egos to recognize that we can also do this. It’s time for us to take a lesson from the kids and let go of our own egos. The children are showing us, but we have to step through our comfort zone and go into an uncomfortable area of letting go of the mask of who we’d like to present ourselves as and instead, just be that true essence that we are.

We are the essence of the children. How many of us stand in front of the mirror sometimes and ask, “I wonder what happened to my face? I don’t feel as old as I look.” That’s because we’re not, and we’re also not as old as we act. I don’t mean that necessarily in a way of judgment. How many of us have friends that are five or ten years younger than us, but on other levels seem to be a much older person then we are?

We get to choose to live our lives as the children we truly are inside. It’s not about, “Oh, I have a special child.” It’s more. It’s about I AM a special child. Thank, bless, kiss and love your child for showing you the child that you are inside again. Let’s bring our children to learn how to do Reconnective healing, to become one of this new generation of Reconnective Kids! And it’s time for us to become Reconnective healing adults, as well.

A lot of research is being done on how The Reconnection works. How is it being done?
Dr. Pearl: They are doing the best they can to try and figure out how to study it. That’s really the best way I can explain it. Dr. Gary Schwartz at the University of Arizona has been doing research on this. Dr. Konstantin Kortokov in St. Petersburg, Russia, just had us out there teaching a class of doctors how to do this work, learning on Olympic athletes.

We came, the doctors showed up to learn, and the Olympic athletes who were the models to be worked on made themselves present. Just four days before the presentation, one of the athletes broke his leg. There was far too much paperwork and far too little time to get that athlete replaced. He came in on crutches, with a cast, jumping on the good leg, holding the other one in the air because it hurt to even put any pressure on it. By the second afternoon, the crutches were down. They were never picked up again, and they could not even find the fracture in the leg any longer.

We could say how did that happen? Unfortunately, or fortunately, the only answer I can give you is that we don’t know, but there are multiple measurements that the researchers are doing to try to find out what it is. Some of them are doing it just out of curiosity. Some are doing it because they think or they’re hoping maybe they can reproduce this in a machine. You’ll never be able to reproduce this in a machine. There are machines out there called Chi machines, supposedly to produce chi and life force energy.

Let’s get real. It is our responsibility to tune in and produce and reproduce the healing force, the life force. It is our responsibility to begin the healing inside, human to human. A machine is not going to do that, because if a machine does it, there is no learning for anyone. No lesson for anyone involved.

We run around all the time saying, “Oh, I have to heal the Earth, I have to heal the flowers, I have to heal the trees.” No. The Earth, the flowers and the trees are a reflection of who we are. It’s not where the problem sits.

When you stand in front of the mirror in the morning and your hair is a mess and your makeup is on crooked, do you try to fix the way the mirror looks? Of course not! You fix yourself, and then your reflection is better. As we learn to heal ourselves, adult to adult, person to person, and now child to child, and child to adult, our own healing becomes reflected in a planet that is healthy. A planet that is green, not warming and melting. A planet that is at peace, not at war.

And maybe part of the lesson of the children is that we don’t need to know. We don’t need to know how it works. We just need to be in it. To experience it. That is our lesson. We don’t need to know how it works.

I know that there are other people out there who have to be wondering, how is this happening?
Dr. Pearl: It’s good that we have scientists looking at it. It’s not good that we have scientists looking at it for the reasons they think they’re looking at it.

To make it profitable?
Dr. Pearl: Or, to just come up with an answer. The gift of scientific research is just the fact that the healings are so real and documented. That science is willing to look into it is what allows other people, who would otherwise walk by it with blinders and not notice it, avail themselves of what is here with Reconnective healing.

For instance, I recently spoke and presented at the University of Oslo in Norway. I was there at the same time as President Barack Obama. It was such a big presentation and such a paradigm shift for a lot of people to imagine someone speaking on healing and the research behind it at the University of Oslo, that even though Barack Obama was there, Reconnective healing was on the front page of the Sunday national paper – a newspaper that’s in two-thirds of all the homes – because science and the mainstream world itself are waking up to the understanding that we are more than we have been, and it is our responsibility to step into that place of being more.

I understand that you got into Reconnective work though an experience you had, through spiritual guides, or what could be called entities.
Dr. Pearl: Maybe sort of, kind of.

Clarify that please.
Dr. Pearl: When these healings started happening, there were certainly a lot of those who I will call people, because they felt like people to me. You might call them guides or spirits or any number of terms you want to come up with. The healing started happening without me expecting it. My patients were coming in to see a chiropractor and I thought I was one. And yet, before I would even touch the patients starting on this one specific day, seven of them started telling me they were seeing and feeling people in the room with us.

Others smelled different kinds of flowers, essences and fragrances. They were feeling a hand on them touching them. Patients were getting up with joints that had been locked into a limited position from surgeries twenty years prior and suddenly having regained full range of motion. This presented itself. It just was. When no one was expecting it, there was no belief. There was no mind-over-matter or hypnosis.

I went home on a Friday thinking I was a chiropractor and I came back on a Monday and I was something else. My parents always told me I was something else, but this was probably not what they had in mind.

What happened in that weekend?
Dr. Pearl: Ahhh, that’s probably a much longer story that we’re going to have time for.

I brought up that question because I think for kids it’s very natural to sense things around them.
Dr. Pearl: Yes it is. There’s no stigma around it, so none of them are afraid to say what they’re feeling. Many of them notice the presence of feeling another hand resting on their hand as they do this work. Others don’t seem to report anything like that. Children are just little individual people. They’re just shorter. (laughs) They allow themselves to access the magical – the magical in the good sense of the word, not magic as in artificial with showmanship, but the genuine twinkle of the truth of magic.

What is your goal with Reconnective Kids?
Dr. Pearl: My goal with The Reconnection and Reconnective healing is that this becomes second nature for every human on the planet. Therefore, as the children learn to access this, the parents get to see that it’s not imagination. The children get to own it as they grow up and they don’t talk it out of their own children in the next generation. And then pretty soon, we won’t have to study or learn it.

We won’t be having this conversation, we’ll just be doing it.
Dr. Pearl: There’s a new level of healing and a new level of evolution for all of us here on the planet. And it simply becomes the choice for each and every one of us, whether we’re willing to step up into it, in essence, whether we’re willing to “come home.” It will be just like breathing. We just breathe.

I see a nation of hurting people. Husbands and wives not talking to each other as they struggle to pay the bills each month. Military men and women killing themselves at rates never seen before. College graduates unable to find work, and high school graduates not able to afford college or find work. ¶ Our first impulse is to blame somebody. Our second impulse is to forget that all of this is happening and turn on the TV.

My impulse is to think about the minority without a voice — the children. Think about what they are processing right now, with moms and dads stressing out as they try to make ends meet, with moms and dads serving our nation overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, losing moms and dads as a consequence of war, watching a single parent try to do his or her best.

We are grateful for the children who have food on their plates, clothes on their backs and roofs over their heads. What about those who do not? What is our responsibility in this age of transformation? What do we owe our children?

A long-term study by Duke University researchers recently was released, revealing that childhood abuse, neglect, social isolation or economic hardship results in a greater likelihood of health risks as adults. A group of New Zealanders, tracked from birth through their mid-30s, were twice as likely to suffer major depression and chronic inflammation if they were maltreated as children.

“What we’re learning is that poor adult health is, in part, manufactured in childhood,” said Avshalom Caspi, the Edward M. Arnett Professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke. “The more difficult the childhood, the more adult age-related disease risk factors we see.” The biology of why and how negative experiences in childhood lead to these health risk factors aren’t addressed by this study, Caspi said, but needs to be explored.

“Ever since Freud, if not Plato, the assumption has been that early childhood experience shapes adult functioning and psychological well-being,” said Jay Belsky, from the Birbeck University of London, who was not involved with this study. “What we see here is even more than that. The early years are important for reasons we haven’t even considered.”

We can identify children who are high risks for learning disabilities — as well as socially unacceptable criminal behavior — and now we have a clue that a difficult childhood can contribute to an unhealthy adult life. But what good are studies when we don’t act on their implications?

As a society, if we wanted to raise a generation of healthy and socially responsible children, we could do more — much more:

Reduce health care costs — We could create a new way to provide health care to all children, and collectively care for children who are abused or neglected at home, increasing the odds that these children will be healthier later as adults than if they were left to fall between the cracks as youths.

Dramatically reduce prison populations — We could collectively care for children who demonstrate tendencies toward anti-social behavior, and offer all children positive role models and the support they need to thrive. The United States incarcerates more of its youth than any other country in the world. The U.S. has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world, with 1 in every 31 American adults in prison, on parole or probation. Our nation seems unmoved by these facts.

Substantially reduce mental stress and improve the quality of the work force — Our nation now provides free education from pre-school to 12th grade. Adding four more years of free education to what is offered would help parents who struggle to send their children to college, as well as reduce the debt burden on students who must take out huge student loans in order to go to college. We could better screen students for potential careers, and create a better defined technical education program that caters to 21st century workforce needs. Not all students need a four-year college education.

Establish wisdom education — We could enlist our elderly, and leaders from the community, to offer wisdom and to emphasize values to our young people as a part of their early childhood education. Our new goal can be to educate every child as if he or she is our own.

I do realize that here in America it is too much of a socialist platform to believe that these ideas will ever see the light of day. So, perhaps the best we can hope for is a souped-up prison program where we remind our jailed youngsters that they are much more than they believe about themselves, teach them how to meditate, and tell them that we truly do care about them and wish them a good life.

And then we can go home and turn on the TV, and feel good about ourselves.

Capitol Climate Action: A national coalition of more than 40 environmental, public health, labor, social justice, faith-based and other advocacy groups plan to engage in civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant on the afternoon of March 2. The Capitol Climate Action, the largest mass mobilization on global warming in the country’s history, reflects the growing public demand for bold action to address the climate and energy crises. Wendell Berry, poet laureate and intellectual leader of the organic movement, and thousands of others intend to stage a multi-generational act of civil disobedience at the Capitol Power Plant, the utility that powers Congress with dirty energy and symbolizes a past that threatens our future. “The Capitol Climate Action comes not a moment too soon. For more than thirty years, scientists, environmentalists and people from all walks of life have urged our leaders to take action to stop global warming; and that action has yet to come,” said Dr. James Hansen, one of the world’s leading climate scientists. Dr. Hansen will join the protest. “Coal is the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country and that must change. The world is waiting for the Obama administration and Congress to lead the way forward on this defining issue of our time. They need to start by getting coal out of Congress.” The Capitol Power Plant, which is owned by Congress and sits just blocks from the American seat of power, burns coal to heat and cool numerous buildings on Capitol Hill. The facility no longer generates electricity, but its reliance on coal – the country’s biggest source of global warming pollution and a documented health hazard – has made it the focus of political controversy and a powerful symbol of coal’s impact on the environment and public health. In response to public pressure, the House of Representatives converted half of the plant’s fuel to cleaner natural gas. But attempts to remove coal from the fuel mix entirely have been blocked by powerful coal-state Senators Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). “This demonstration marks the beginning of a sustained effort to draw a line in the sand against this dirty and dangerous fuel,” said Matt Leonard of Greenpeace, which is helping to organize the protest. “Our leaders cannot promise us a healthy and prosperous future as long as coal is polluting our soil, water and atmosphere.” – www.capitolclimateaction.org

MINNEAPOLIS, MN
Research on Integrative Medicine: The North American Research Conference on Complementary & Integrative Medicine will take place May 12-15 at the Hilton Minneapolis Hotel. This conference is sponsored by the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, which consists of 42 leading academic medical centers from across North America. This is a follow-up to the very successful first conference presented in Edmonton, Alberta, in May 2006, which was itself the third in a series of international meetings initially co-sponsored by Harvard Medical School and the University of California, San Francisco. The North American Research Conference on Complementary & Integrative Medicine is international in scope and invites and encourages the submission of scientific abstracts and proposals for sessions from corporate scientists, academic researchers, educators and healthcare providers worldwide. The conference will showcase original scientific complementary, alternative and integrative medical research through keynote and plenary presentations, oral and poster presentations, and innovative scientific sessions. Areas presented and discussed at this conference will include basic science, clinical, methodological, health services and education research. All interested researchers, educators and practitioners as well as conventional practitioners are urged to attend. This goal of the directors of this conference is to provide a single event that attracts a critical mass of cutting-edge, peer-reviewed science and discussion in the broad field of complementary and integrative medical research. The conference invites and benefits enormously from collaboration with many major professional organizations, publishers and granting agencies. Events throughout the four-day meeting are designed to foster the development of new collaborations and to strengthen existing partnerships.
LA PAZ, BOLIVIA
New Constitution: A national referendum on January 25 approved the country’s new constitution, granting long-overdue rights to the country’s indigenous majority in an effort to address 500 years of injustice. More than 60 percent of Bolivia’s population self-identify as indigenous, and nearly the same percentage live under the poverty line. The new constitution establishes Bolivia as pluri-national (a nation containing many nations), formally recognizing the country’s 36 indigenous and Afro-Bolivian nations. It also requires that government offices be able to communicate with their constituents in their own language, rather than speaking only in Spanish, a language a significant number of indigenous people don’t speak. The constitution grants autonomy to indigenous groups across the nation, enabling them to govern their own communities, develop their own economy, and administer the use of natural resources. These changes to the constitution, as well as the new parts of the document which call for state control of natural resources, seek to ensure the majority of Bolivians benefit from the country’s vast oil and gas reserves, resources which have historically been looted by multinational corporations and wealthy families. In addition, the new constitution reserves seats in the Senate and Congress specifically for representatives from indigenous communities, and officially recognizes forms of community justice practiced by many indigenous groups in the country – as long as the practices adhere to existing Bolivian law. – www.indiancountrytoday.com

Global classroom design: Worldwide, 776 million people are illiterate. To address this crisis by providing access to a quality education for all children, there is a pressing need to upgrade the crumbling infrastructure of tens of millions of existing classrooms, and build ten million new classrooms. Meeting this challenge represents the largest building project the world has ever undertaken. In response, Orient Global, Architecture for Humanity and a consortium of partners are launching the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom, the first large-scale initiative to improve the design of classrooms around the world. The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge invites the global design and construction community to collaborate with primary and secondary school teachers and students to create smarter, safer and more sustainable learning environments. Teams can partner with a school of their choice or design a classroom for one of our school-building partners. Registration ends May 1 and entries are due June 1. The winning school will receive up to $50,000 to build or improve its classrooms and its design team will receive a $5,000 grant to help make it happen. The design competition will be judged by an international, inter-disciplinary panel of experts in the fields of both education and architecture (including students themselves). The resulting entries will be available and accessible to all on the Open Architecture Network [www.openarchitecturenetwork.org]. – www.goodnewsagency.org

Dear EarthTalk: Is it true that some baby bottles contain chemicals that can cause health problems for babies? If so, how can I find alternatives that are safer? - Amy Gorman, Berkeley, Calif.

No links connecting specific human illnesses to chemicals oozing out of baby bottles have been proven definitively. Nonetheless, many parents are heeding the call of scientists to switch to products with less risk. A 2008 report by American and Canadian environmental researchers entitled “Baby’s Toxic Bottle” found that plastic polycarbonate baby bottles leach dangerous levels of Bisphenol-A (BPA), a synthetic chemical that mimics natural hormones and can send bodily processes into disarray, when heated.

All six of the leading brands of baby bottles tested – Avent, Disney/The First Years, Dr. Brown’s, Evenflo, Gerber and Playtex – leaked what researchers considered dangerous amounts of BPA. The report calls on major retailers selling these bottles – including Toys “R” Us, Babies “R” Us, CVS, Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart – to switch to safer products.

According to the report, BPA is a “developmental, neural and reproductive toxicant that mimics estrogen and can interfere with healthy growth and body function.” Researchers cite numerous animal studies demonstrating that the chemical can damage reproductive, neurological and immune systems during critical stages of development. It has also been linked to breast cancer and to the early onset of puberty.

So what’s a concerned parent to do? Glass bottles are a tried-and-true chemical-free solution, and they are widely available, though very breakable. To the rescue are several companies making BPA-free plastic bottles (out of either PES/polyamide or polypropylene instead of polycarbonate). Some of the leaders are BornFree, thinkbaby, Green to Grow, Nuby, Momo Baby, Mother’s Milkmate and Medela’s. These brands are available at natural foods stores, directly from manufacturers or from online vendors.

Most of the major brands selling BPA-containing bottles are now also offering or planning to offer BPA-free versions of their products. Consumers should read labels and packaging carefully to make sure that any product they are considering buying says unequivocally that it does not contain the chemical.

Unfortunately, switching to a BPA-free bottle is no guarantee the chemical won’t make its way into your baby’s bloodstream anyway. BPA is one of the 50 most-produced chemicals in the world. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), it is used in everything from plastic water jugs labeled #7 to plastic take-out containers, baby bottles and canned food liners. It is so omnipresent that the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has found that 95 percent of Americans have the chemical in their urine.

Also, nursing mothers – especially those who haven’t discarded their old BPA-containing Nalgene water bottles – may be passing the chemical along through their breast milk. And if that weren’t enough, BPA is also used in the lining of many metal liquid baby formula cans. The nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) has posted email links to the consumer affairs offices of the major formula manufacturers so concerned parents can ask them to remove BPA from their product offerings and packaging.

I’m frequently asked how I do my version of psychic astrology, in which I combine the language of the stars with past-life information and input from Spirit Guides, spirits of the deceased and Ascended Masters and Teachers. A few years ago I began practicing astrology without any psychic input. I was doing good work, but it was all from my brain, which couldn’t possibly reflect all of me. When my psychic opening began, shortly after opening my practice, everything changed, and I set about learning to develop that side of myself.

Uncovering my abilities had much to do with sorting out the various sources of information to which I always had access. I learned to operate what I think of as my "inner sound board," a contraption full of knobs, dials and switches used to figure out what inner voices were saying what. Whether inner children with unprocessed emotional junk, the voices of my parents or other authority figures that I’d internalized somewhere along the way, Spirit Guides or the spirits of dead people, or my intuitive and psychic sense, the first step was sorting them out.

Each of us has intuition and psychic abilities. The route to developing them will differ for each of us, but follows a generalized script that includes learning to tell apart the various voices we carry in us all the time. Below are some thoughts on each and tips to learn to tell them apart.

Inner Children. Each time something frightening, unpleasant or traumatic happened to you when you were a child, you were imprinted by your strong desire to avoid repeating a similar situation in the future. Now, you’re likely carrying a host of these little inner kids who frequently advise you about how to avoid the kind of pain and unhappiness you experienced long ago. Each of those now helping you run your life needs to be heard, and you must take care of the need they had at the unhappy times when you were younger which, no matter what they say, always boils down to some combination of acceptance, love and safety. Offer them this now and they’ll be happy, and will begin to work with you instead of feeding you fear.

Parental/Authority Voices. We all internalize the ideas, opinions, strategies and fears of our parents and other authority figures. Whether we embrace or reject them, they’re a part of the foundation we carry into our later life. They’re gifts from those people (even if we don’t like them!), tools they thought would best serve us in our own lives. Our judgments about the right kinds of work, relationships and life path often stem from what we learned from our parents about the right ways to live and reasons for living. We need to decide if we want to hold onto and perpetuate them, or let them go.

Spirit Guides. Each of us has Spirit Guides available to support us in making choices that serve our highest good. What they offer is loving support for your ongoing development. If a voice you identify is judgmental or fearful, or in some other way not loving, it’s not from your Spirit Guides!

Deceased People. Those who are psychically open may attract the spirits of deceased persons. Their agendas differ. Some are entirely kind, some are not, and some are simply afraid of what’s happened to them (not all know they’re dead). If you experience this, you may have feelings, thoughts and fears you’re very sure do not belong to you. Say "All energies that do not belong to me I send back to Source!" and say "No, thank you!" to any energy that makes you uncomfortable in any way.

Intuition/Psychic Sense. We each have an inner knowing that can come through once we learn to sort out all the other kinds of voices. It’s just there, waiting for us. Learning to differentiate between all of these others leaves you better able to focus on and amplify your natural intuitive and psychic senses. Without the static and white noise of what isn’t really you, you’ll see that all the information you need is available to you at all times.
