Opening Up for Something New

shehata

Something has to go. I can feel it. It's a familiar feeling actually. It arises whenever it's time for me to go through the house and evaluate what I own. It is usually motivated by an internal restlessness. I take a look at everything and determine if it still serves me. Do I currently use it? Do I love it? Anything that doesn't meet the criteria doesn't make the cut. It's the harsh reality that objects face when they live with a feng shui practitioner. The interesting thing about this … [Read more...]

How do you feel about your belongings?

Shehata

I have been bald twice in my life. I shaved my head, on two separate occasions, for spiritual trips to India. Shaving my head was optional. Despite the assumption that India is riddled with bald spiritual seekers on a path to enlightenment, I found that the people of India look at you with the same look as the people of Minnesota: What's with the bald woman? There are a number of reasons, depending on the spiritual tradition, for shaving all or part of the head. The reason that appealed to me … [Read more...]

Do You Play the Rearranging Game?

shehata

I have this game that I accidentally play sometimes when I am cleaning my house. It goes a little something like this: Take an item out of this room and put it in this room. Take this other item and put it over here. Take these papers and recycle part of them, but then put the rest of them back in this other pile. By the time I am done with this riveting little cleaning game, the house is a little cleaner and I feel accomplished. After all, I have successfully rearranged my stuff from one … [Read more...]

You and your relationship with your home

shehata

Having a home is like dating. I realized that recently while working with a new client. They have a beautiful high-end condominium that is well furnished and sits nestled on a lake. And yet, they find themselves a little "uninterested" in their home. It doesn't feel quite right. I assessed the usual culprits. We looked at the floor plan, the external and internal elements, and the layout of furniture. We discussed their lives, their goals, their occupations and their previous homes. There … [Read more...]

Decision Making Affects the Flow of Life

coffee

There were so many choices, so I picked none. It was summer in Paris, and I was spending the month writing, relaxing and exploring the city. It felt like a temporary home, as I had done a house swap with my home in Minneapolis and was staying in a lovely flat near the Eiffel tower. Each day I would venture out and explore from a different angle; a touristy jaunt to a museum or a writing workshop or dance class. As the days passed, I observed all the wonderful little cafés and imagined how nice … [Read more...]

Are your things helping you, or holding you back?

shehata

Raise your hand if you own something that you don't currently use. Think of your closets, drawers, attics and basements. Now that most of us are holding up our hands, let me explain why. I believe there are deep reasons that we hold onto things. And I believe these reasons can teach us about who we are and where we're going. Think about your unused items. Maybe they fall under one category, like clothing that no longer fits or books from a previous hobby. Or perhaps there is a wide range of … [Read more...]

The Universe’s Message is Received, Loud and Clear

shehata

As a feng shui practitioner of nearly a decade, there have been many times over the years where I have used feng shui to create movement in my life. But, sometimes I reflect on the times that my life has used feng shui to create movement in me. I really believe that sometimes the Universe decides you are not moving fast enough toward a goal and decides to intervene. Maybe you are in a dead-end job or a dead-end relationship. Maybe life has become stagnant in some other way. Then all of a … [Read more...]

Answers are inside of ourselves, and our homes

home_living-room

They say that the eyes are the window to the soul. As usual, I do not know who "they" are, but I will add that if that's the case, your home is a close second. I believe that your home is truly a mirror of your life or a window to your soul; all your goals and all your obstacles are reflected within. I also believe that when you change your living space, you will affect the other areas of your life. My work as the Space Guru is to use feng shui, organization, design and intuition to coach my … [Read more...]

Vision Quest

I'm sitting alone in front of a campfire in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Northern California. I am three days into a nine-day healing retreat. I am thrilled to have this time to myself. When you have the opportunity to put your "householder" duties aside, and be a "sadhu" for a week or two, it can be very enlightening. My campfire is small and is burning at a steady pace. I have never built my own fire before. Since I didn't have the honor of being a girl scout, I … [Read more...]
