My Favorite Films of 2010

simon

I am honored and proud to be a voting member of The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences that nominates and then votes each year for the Oscars. I have said often, however, that I have absolutely no idea how to judge a "Best" film or actor or screenplay or anything else. To attempt to do so seems akin to going into the Louvre and picking out the "best" painting. So the Van Gogh is "better" than the Renoir or Gauguin or any other painting? Oh, please! In addition, movie politics (as … [Read more...]

Bringing Back the Old Hollywood

simon

Fade In. We're in a family room in the year 2023. A couple in their early 50s are watching one of their favorite films on Turner Classic Movies as their teenage daughter walks in, sits next to them for a moment, and speaks. "You guys are so cute with your old movies." "Thanks, sweetheart," Mom laughs. "Can I ask you something?" the daughter responds. Putting the film on pause, Dad says "Sure. What's up?" "It must have been so cool for you guys to have lived during a time … [Read more...]

My 10 Favorite Films Of 2009

simon

As always, my list includes my own personal favorites, not the films I consider best, a classification I find to be both impossible and absurd. I have no idea what the "best film" is. I only know the films I enjoyed the most. Happy 2010! 1...The Blind Side. One of the most touching, charming, wondrous, uplifting and miraculous movies of the last several years. Sandra Bullock was born to play the lead role and has never been better. Hollywood has to stop equating dark, cynical and dreary with … [Read more...]

Avatar: A Spiritual Journey of our Soul

Avatar-Neytiri

Landmark films literally change the face of the art form itself and are rare indeed. The Great Train Robbery, the first big hit silent film; The Jazz Singer, the first talking film; The Wizard of Oz, the first huge family film; Jaws, the first summer blockbuster; Star Wars, the first science fiction epic of the new technology era; and now Avatar. Avatar is simply unlike any other film ever made. The experience of Avatar in 3D is a glimpse into the potential of film to literally immerse the … [Read more...]

A Review: The Blind Side

simon

Remember what it was like to go to a movie and cry and laugh and applaud and feel great about just being alive when you walk out of the theater? I do. And you will too when you run as fast as you can to a neighborhood theater to see The Blind Side, one of the most touching, wondrous, uplifting and miraculous movies of the last several years. And, what makes the experience even more delicious is that the film is based on a true story. Michael Oher was a homeless teenager in Memphis, TN. His … [Read more...]

Review: Cold Souls

simon

It feels so good to have a movie to write about again. For those of you who have followed this column for the last seven years, please know that, as long as films like Cold Souls are released, I will continue this column, even though it will be on an irregular basis. Now, to the film. Cold Souls is a jaw-dropping, original film, with the only possible comparison being to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, one of my favorite films in Spiritual Cinema. In Cold Souls, the gifted actor … [Read more...]

The Perception of 2012

2012-film1

So, it has already begun. The drumbeat of doom and gloom about the so-called end of the Mayan Calendar in December 2012 can now be heard, seen and read with increasing frequency in all forms of media. Apocalyptic books about 2012 are on publishing schedules worldwide. Networks are preparing documentaries and series about the “end times.” A recent search of www.imdb.com – the movie business go-to website for past, present and future films – lists these upcoming titles from now through … [Read more...]

Mike Leigh’s ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’ Giggles

simon

There have been some wonderful films lately that have looked at those of us who present what we might call our "wounded" face to the world. People who seem angry, self-absorbed and/or unapproachable. As we discussed in last month's column, Gran Torino and Ghost Town both illuminate the pain, sadness and vulnerability that lie just beneath the surface of those wounded faces and personalities. Now comes the perfectly titled Happy-Go-Lucky so that we can see the polar opposite of that wounded … [Read more...]

My 5 Favorite Films of 2008

As I note every year, my favorite films are not the ones that I consider the "best' films of 2008. I do not believe that works of art can or should be ordered from good to best to whatever. How could anyone objectively say that a Rembrandt is a "better" painting than a DaVinci or a Van Gogh? We only know what we personally like and don't like.As a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, I hope that we eventually change the description of the Oscars that … [Read more...]

Charm, Joy in Last Chance Harvey

It's "Award" season in Hollywood. This is the time of year when movies of "substance" finally make their way into some theaters across the country. Unfortunately, to Hollywood nowadays, "substance" more often than not means dark, depressing, nihilistic and/or violent. But not always. In most years, there are at least a couple of life-enhancing gems that somehow find their way into the mix...and our hearts.Such is the case this year with Last Chance Harvey, which … [Read more...]

Ghost Town

You know the kind of person who always seems angry at or disgusted by the world and all the people around him? The kind of guy who seems to wear a big sign around his neck that says, "Don't bother me for any reason at any time." Ever wonder about why that kind of person is the way he is...or do we just try to avoid him? What about the guy who is married to what seems to be, and actually is, a wonderful woman who loves him, treats him well, but he cheats on her anyway? What goes on … [Read more...]

After Life

Every once in a while, a film comes along with such an intriguing premise that we bolt upright in our chairs when we first see a preview for it or read about it. In Hollywood parlance, a "home-run" premise is worth its weight in celluloid. Of course, we are sometimes elated and sometimes disappointed when we see the actual film. As Forrest Gump so eloquently said, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." Opening this coming December, a … [Read more...]

Mamma Mia!

Mamma, Mia…what a movie! Exhilarating, dazzling, breathtakingly beautiful for your eyes, rockingly wonderful for your ears, and energetically enchanting for your heart, Mamma, Mia is pure, unadulterated fun. Based on the smash Broadway hit, Mamma, Mia revives the old-fashioned movie musical with such a flourish that I kept thinking: where have you BEEN, musicals? Welcome back! The story of the film is simplicity at its best. A young woman (a charming young actress named Amanda Seyfried) is … [Read more...]

Wall-E is a Movie Experience for All Humanity

Wall-E is a completely original work of staggering, visionary genius. The film also possesses so many brilliant nuances and human insights, and has such a pure and gentle heart that it truly has no filmic antecedent. Wall-E is a robot, living alone (almost) on earth, cleaning up the trillions of pounds of trash left behind when humanity departed its uninhabitable planet. Wall-E's earth wasn't ravaged by either a war or a meteor. No, it was decimated by consumerism, greed, gluttony and … [Read more...]

Somewhere In Time…and Place

As I write this column, my wife and I are in beautiful Mendocino, Calif., for the city's annual film festival. Mendocino has been the location for some beautiful and memorable movies such as The Summer Of 1942, Racing with the Moon, and Same Time, Next Year. Being here and experiencing the lasting effect that filmmaking has had on this magical beach community in Northern California has transported me back to that summer, almost 30 years ago, when we brought a film crew for the first time to … [Read more...]
