A Walk in the Woods with John Haines

Ricci2

"We speak of nature, of the natural world, as if that were something distinct from ourselves and the social world we appear to have made, seldom noticing that we are in NATURE and never out of it..." - John Haines, "Fables and Distances" (1) - Introduction It is early October with the sun just above the eastern hills. Shadows from tall aspen, elm and oak lie diagonally across the trail (cut years ago by workers building a mill near the river). I walk alone. A carved oak branch provides … [Read more...]

Poetry and Awareness

kayak

I feel the sunset before I see the first rays over the mountain. I taste the salt before the Lynn Canal's waves splash over the bow of the green kayak. I know it is going to rain before western clouds arrive and the summer evening turns active and chaotic. The ravens fly in a circular pattern, their voice carries for miles, and I hear their wings flap. Through these events, I have gained an awareness of the surroundings. The Path to Awareness Starts Small

Cattails flicker behind Indian grass; milkweed releases their seeds; cotton floats lazily under the tree canopies. The northern wind is slow. The pond water has stopped and reflects afternoon light. Thoughts are pushed away, refocusing upon the landscape stretching into the horizon. Shadows roam across the fields as the smattering of clouds and sun play. The oak trees on the eastern edge of the wetlands sing with the cicada's drone starting and stopping in the same tone. I sit upon a wooden … [Read more...]

Seeking Awareness

ricci

The first step to a more peaceful life and existence in this world is awareness. What is the definition of "awareness"? What does it mean in the context of everyday life and how we grow as people in a group, as a society, and as individuals? Awareness is the knowing of your surroundings. It is the knowing of the energy emanating from you and the energy trying to penetrate you. In some situations, it is the protective shield encircling the body and spirit, a reaction to negative energy, or a … [Read more...]
