This year, UNESCO has issued a Commemorative Medal in his honor, and many literary, cultural and spiritual organizations are celebrating the 800th anniversary of Rumi's birth. This article is devoted to this occasion. People often think of poetry as something for a special mood, a rare moment-something aloof and detached from our daily life. Yet, spiritual poetry can orient our daily life and work in a meditative way, and in this … [Read more...]

What’s New in December 2007

A preview of new works of noteNew Sacred GeometryIs there a geometric design to the universe? The ancient Greeks, Mayans, Egyptians, and others believed so, as evidenced by their use of nature's recurring mathematical patterns in architecture, music, and language. Significance of the End of the Mayan Calendar

Books, magazines, and the airwaves are resonating with speculations about the end of the Mayan calendar within the context of Mayan cosmology, new age beliefs, Christian revelations of the end of times, and historical apocalyptic predictions. For me, the key word in the previous sentence is "speculations." The bottom line is that no one knows for sure what-if anything-will happen in five years at the time of the winter solstice in 2012.As a history major I know that since the beginning … [Read more...]

Grounding with the Earth

A recent grounding workshop at Minnehaha Falls Park made me aware of all the supportive energy I have taken from the Earth, particularly during my transition from banker to energy healer. But what is grounding, you ask? My definition of grounding is to consciously connect our body's energy with the Earth's energy. Obviously, we are connected to the Earth's energy through gravity, the food we eat, and the simple act of breathing. But how often do we focus on that connection? When I focus through … [Read more...]

Musings on the Solstice

Like a lot of people, I suffer a little from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Before I had heard of that diagnosis, I just thought that gray days got me down...and lots of gray days in a row got me way down. Knowing that I have a disorder really doesn't change that much. The gray days of November and December still give me a little touch of wistfulness, a case of the blues and a longing to get away to warmer and sunnier climates. I think that is why I make it a practice to honor and celebrate … [Read more...]

So it is all good." - Bettina Madini"I think it is … [Read more...]

On the Meaning of Time, and Why We Find It Slip-Sliding Away

One day, googling at random, surfing, I guess you could say, I came across a wall clock for sale. The numbers around the face were replaced with the word "now." Clever, I thought, but for someone who celebrates the now moment, is there need for another clock? I spent a year studying with the late Paula Sunray, a spiritual teacher and author who moved through life with her purpose always in mind. Every Monday night, I listened with others as she reminded us what it meant to be human. We … [Read more...]
